Tourmaline is known as the rainbow gemstone. There are many a number of varieties of crystal that make up this Tourmaline group. It is the second birthstone for the month of October. They differ in color and they are named based on that. The Greek name for without color or colorless is “Anchorite”. It is very rare. Then we have the reddish-pink variety that is called “Rubellite”. It exhibits a sort of violet hue.
The yellow-brown one is “Dravite” and the shaded green is “Verdelite”. The shaded blue is “Indigolite” and the violet-blue is “Siberite”. The uniqueness of the rainbow gem is brought from the legends in the past. One of these legends is from Egypt where the Egyptians believed that while traveling towards the Earth’s surface the rainbow stone and its varieties passed over a rainbow and that is what caused them to absorb all of the colors in the rainbow in this process.
That is why it is referred to as the rainbow gemstone. One specific gemstone known as the “watermelon tourmaline” is very beautiful because of its unusual red core, it has an inner layer of white and the outer layer of green. On a whole, it represents a watermelon and thus it got its name. All these crystals vary in their color tone but the rare ones are the uni-colored stones or crystals.
The discovery of this rare rainbow gem came into existence about the time when the Dutch first started importing the tourmaline to Europe. They were known as the ash puller because the stone was heated to high temperatures and then they pulled the ash created due to the burning and this ash is pulled out with the help of meerschaum pipes. The deposits are found in pegmatite deposits and alluvial deposits. Right now Brazil is leading in the supplier of this Tourmaline but there are many countries that have discovered the tourmaline deposits like Russia, Madagascar, Zambia, India, Zimbabwe, etc.
